Your skin is something that needs protecting and ideally, you want to be protecting it from a young age. The reason is that your skin is aging from the moment you’re born. That means by the time you reach the age of 20, you may already start to see the effects of aging.
Whether you’re looking to grow old naturally or you’re open to tweaking your skin here and there over time, there’s no wrong or right way. However, to help save yourself some pain and money, it’s worth finding ways of taking better care of your skin so that you can look and feel younger for much longer.
With that being said, here are some helpful tips to take better care of your skin in your 30s.
Speak to a dermatologist for any skin-related issues
Firstly, when it comes to taking better care of your skin, it’s always worth approaching your dermatologist or speaking to one if you haven’t done so before. Dermatologists are experts in skin so speaking to someone about the difference between dry skin and eczema might be just what you need in order to treat your skin-related troubles.
Everyone is different and their environments also influence the condition of their skin. It’s good to speak to the experts in order to gain a better understanding of what’s going on with your skin in the first place and how to best treat it.
It’s important to do this because the last thing you do want is to start using treatments or products that don’t really do much for your skin in particular.
Introduce a skincare routine
A skincare routine is an absolute must when introducing your skin to a better way of life. If you’re simply washing your skin with soapy water, then you’re missing out on a whole magical cupboard of skincare products that are useful for helping anti-age and nourish your skin.
It might not be that you have time for a seven-step routine but if you’re interested in what types of products you should be including in your routine then here are a few suggestions:
- Cleanser
- Moisturizer
- Serum
- Exfoliant
- Day Cream/Night Cream
- Eye Cream
Of course, it might be that you pick and choose which ones you use on your skin. However, it’s worth using at least a cleanser and moisturizer to help clean and hydrate the skin. That should be your bare minimum.
Try to introduce your skincare products slowly but surely. If you’re trying to use half a dozen at once, chances are you won’t keep up the routine. As you build up your choice of products, you’ll be able to experiment in order to find the right products for your skin.
Always wear an SPF
An SPF should always be worn when it comes to your skin. If you’re not wearing an SPF, then you’re doing damage to the skin from all of the UV rays that shine down every day. Even if the sun isn’t peaking through the clouds, it’s still there and still very much impacting your skin’s health.
UV rays are the main danger when it comes to your skin and if you’re not using an SPF, you’ve got no barrier of protection. That results in damage to the skin and potentially life-threatening problems such as skin cancer appearing.
Always wear an SPF, ideally one that’s 30 or higher, and make sure to continually top up on this sunscreen throughout the day. If you’re someone who often forgets to apply moisturizer, let alone an SPF, consider incorporating it within your skincare products. There are plenty of moisturizers and day creams that come with SPF already in it.
Try to reduce bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol
Bad habits are a hindrance to your skin and it’s something to be aware of when it comes to taking better care of it. When you’re in your 30s, you’ve likely established a few bad habits that are doing some damage to the skin.
For example, smoking is a major bad influence on your skin’s health and appearance. It’s not great for your general health either!
Alcohol is just as bad and it’s one that can really impact the health and appearance of the skin. Both cause dry skin and can strip your skin of that healthy glow. If you’re trying to improve your skincare in your 30s, try to reduce bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol. Even better, try to cut it out completely.
Remove your makeup at the end of the day
At the end of the day, there is something you should be doing, without fail and that’s taking your makeup off. Unfortunately, whether it’s down to laziness or simply forgetting to do it, a lot of people end up going to bed still with the remnants of their makeup on. Even if there were minimal amounts, to begin with, it’s still sitting on your skin.
The problem with that is that makeup suffocates your skin’s pores and that results in blocked pores and you guessed it – breakouts.
Take off your makeup at the end of the day, even if it’s just with a bog-standard makeup remover. It’s better than doing nothing. If you’re not taking off your makeup, you’ll be actively contributing to the aging skin that you don’t want.
You also want to avoid problems and potential infections that can come from wearing makeup. This can be particularly dangerous when it comes to eye makeup, like mascara for example.
Drink plenty of water every day
Water is your best friend when it comes to hydrating the skin and keeping it healthy. If you don’t drink a lot of water on a daily basis, chances are, you’re not going to see a great difference in your skin’s health and appearance.
Ideally, you want to be drinking a liter of water a day, up to two liters in fact. That being said, drinking that much water every day can be hard to achieve. Especially, as you’re likely to have to sit on the toilet multiple times of the day as a result.
With that being said, try to drink as much as you can and incorporate any extra drinks that are made up of mostly water but that keep drinking water interesting. From fruit juices to cups of tea, there are plenty of ways to get your daily water intake in.
Use a humidifier in your rooms
A humidifier is something that you could invest in if you’re looking to improve the health of your skin. Humidifiers are good for helping draw moisture out of the air, so if you’ve got excess moisture in your home, it’s useful to have.
The problem with too much moisture on your skin is that it’s going to end up causing pockets of dirt and debris that result in breakouts.
It’s a fine balance of making sure there’s enough moisture but that it’s not to an excessive amount.
Get enough sleep every night
Getting enough sleep every night is important, so when it comes to taking better care of your skin in your 30s, make sure you’re getting plenty of rest. Ideally, you want to have around seven to nine hours of sleep per night. If you’re not getting that, then chances are you’re damaging your skin and your general health and wellbeing.
Sleep is an important aspect of keeping yourself nice and healthy, so don’t sacrifice your sleep or quality of sleep.
Hopefully, these tips will help ensure you take better care of your skin during this decade.
