Whether you’re walking down an actual red carpet or just attending an important event, date or meeting, there are moments in your life when you are going to want to steal the spotlight – for all the right reasons!
We’re looking at five celebs who have been on point with their outfit choices, not because they have been shocking or outrageous, but because they have made perfect decisions for the occasion. Let’s take inspiration from these ladies, here to prove that making a truly great impression is not about going all out but about careful, stylish choices.
Serena Williams
One of the fiercest tennis players on the planet, with a record breaking 22 Grand Slam titles to her name, Serena Williams is not to be messed with on the courts. She’s also a total fitty on the red carpet!
Boby shamers have tried to put our lady Williams down by saying that her figure looks too masculine. We are not quite sure what they are looking at as she consistently looks fantastic with her strong, athletic figure. She plays to her strengths and weaknesses when it comes to fashion. At the 2016 Wimbledon Winners Ball, she chose a full length gown with a bedazzled bodice, showing off her perfectly toned arms. She kept her hair loose and had a shimmering makeup palette, keeping her look soft and feminine.
If you want to make an impression like Serena, get to know your body and understand what suits your shape and particularities. We all have beautifully different bodies – keep it classy ladies and don’t let the body shamers make you feel bad for being daring and gorgeous.
Liv Boeree
We’ll forgive you if you haven’t heard of Liv Boeree, but trust us – she’s a queen! Like Serena, she is bossing it in a male-dominated arena as she is one of the most successful poker players in the world. She has racked up over $2,000,000 in live tournament earnings, playing against both men and women and killing it. Her success has earned her a spot in Team PokerStars, a team of the best of the best of poker pros sponsored by a popular online poker provider.
When she’s playing in poker tournaments she is usually very casual, which is totally appropriate in this setting, she’s focused on her game and not what she looks like. Put her on the red carpet, however, and the lady pulls out all the stops.
We spotted her at the World War Z premier and she totally killed it with her outfit. Her simple black dress with a daring neckline was appropriately sexy – exactly right for this occasion while her simple makeup complemented the choice of dress.
If you want to make an impression like Liv, understand the event you are going to. There’s a dress code for work and one for play, find out what yours is and how you fit comfortably into it. Also, be confident: Liv certainly wasn’t the most recognizable celeb on that red carpet, walked by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, but her elegance and confidence shined through nevertheless.
Mia Wasikowska
26 year old Australian actress Mia Wasikowska is the star of the recent Alice in Wonderland films, and she broke the mold recently by skipping the hot ticket at Cannes to attend the premiere of “Alice Through the Looking Glass” in London last May.
Mia has very pale skin and is known for her fresh-faced look. For the premiere she chose a gorgeous Prada gown with black and green sequins. Her hair is sleeked back to show off her face, and her makeup natural. This is definitely a case of less is more for someone who has fairly subtle looks.
If you want to make an impression like Mia, be comfortable in your own skin. Whether you have pale or dark skin, own it and be proud of it. Some complexions can take a lot of color and accessories, others can’t. To really stand out you’ll understand where your limits lie.
Lupita Nyongo’o
Lupita Nyong’o is another incredibly powerful woman who knows how to dress to make an impression at every occasion. This lady is a brilliant actress, filmmaker, she has a Master’s degree from Yale and speaks five different languages – yep, she’s pretty amazing.
At the most recent Tony Awards, Nyong’o and her fellow cast members from “Eclipsed”, the first ever show to be nominated at the awards to be written and directed exclusively by black women, stole the red carpet. Nyong’o is blessed with a goregous figure, perfect complexion and cheek bones to die for – and she knows how to work them all! Her dress was like a textured, colored wonderland!
If you want to make an impression like Nyong’o, remember that sometimes it pays to make a bold move, just make sure you’ve got the confidence to pull it off. Don’t be afraid to go with your personal choice of attire!
Beyonce
We’ve left Queen B last. As she’s such an obvious choice, we wanted to give the other ladies a chance to shine first. However, it is a fact that Beyonce knows how to work her style to make sure she’s making the right impression at the right time.
She’s had quite a bit of practice, as this lady has sold over 100 million records worldwide, and makes it to all of the best parties. Take a look at her at the Met Gala get up, where she’s wearing wearing a Latex Givenchy bodycon gown with strategically placed sequins and impressive shoulders. You know that not many people can make that work, but Queen B certainly does.
If you want to make an impression like Beyonce, it’s going to be tough! We think Beyonce’s appeal is that she knows who she is as a woman and she’s able to adapt her style to suit her current mood. She’s not tied down to one look and she’s prepared to push preconceptions. Allow yourself to vary your looks: you may know that you look great in that perfect black gown, but you don’t want to be boring or predictable. Be bold and diversify your look according to the occasion, the theme and even your mood and you’re sure to make a lasting impression.
What all of these ladies have in common is that they are strong, independent and fabulous at what they do. They make fashion choices that enhance their natural and inner beauty. Yes, they are making a statement on the red carpet, but it’s not sensationalist or too showy. We can all borrow a page from these Queens’ books to help us stand out, whether it’s understanding your body or learning to be bold. Be inspired, ladies, and good luck!
