How many of us call the blush pink or creamy beige shade that most Louboutin Pigalle heels come in, nude pumps? I’m guilty as charged. I also call my light beige coloured briefs nude. But as a black girl that light blush and cream shade is far my true shade of nude. Yeah nude is in. It has been in for a while now but only so many brands have bothered to research and create a perfect nude for the diversity of skin colours that exist not only in the white community but also in the black community.
Innovative lingerie brand, Nubian Skin, aims to ’empower’ every woman by launching a new underwear collection for darker skin tones.
The lack of nude-coloured options in the lingerie market has inspired London-based label Nubian Skin to create a range of underwear for women of colour. So if you’ve struggled in the past to find underclothing that matches your skin tone, this might be the collection for you.
This has to be the best news I’ve heard in a while. I’ve always wanted to find my ‘true nude’. And these girls are showing me that I can finally get that. The line will include nude bras, knickers and hosiery in both plain and lacy styles, and in a wide variety of sizes and shades to suit all shapes and skin tones. The debut collection will come in sizes from 30B to 36E, but has plans of expanding to plus-sizes in the near future.
“A nude bra, skin-tone tights / pantyhose – basics of every woman’s wardrobe. In theory…It’s the grand debate, what do I wear under a white or sheer blouse? What colour hosiery will go with these amazing shoes? Black just isn’t going to work. The simple answer is nude. But my nude isn’t the nude I see in shops. Despite the reality that women of colour have the same needs as all women when it comes to lingerie and hosiery (and spend the same of their hard-earned money), the industry simply doesn’t cater to us. So, I thought, it’s time to rethink the definition of nude. Thus, Nubian Skin was born.
It’s an uphill battle, but every revolution starts somewhere. Looking at the makeup industry, it took Eunice W. Johnson to create Fashion Fair Cosmetics in 1973 for black women to really have an adequate choice in finding makeup colours to suit them. In the 1990s and 2000s, mainstream brands began to realise the value of providing to women of colour, and despite the billions we spend on make up each year, there are still brands that have chosen not to provide an offering for us…”
Nude hosiery and lingerie for women of colour. Yasssssss! Nude undergarments are definitely a must have for every closet and Nubian Skin are making it possible for women of colour to be able to enjoy that ‘luxury’ of wearing underwear that blends with your skin tone. No more blush pinks, beige creams and all the other nudes which are certainly not meant for me.
Their online store launches in 3 weeks. Will you be grabbing a few sets?
I certainly will.
Based on the feedback and press Nubian Skin has been getting, expect stock to sell out as soon as they launch.
