ABY once more delivers another inspiring interview. It must be tremendously hard for many aspiring models in Cameroon to get a breakthrough. It is a tough industry to get survive in, let alone get into. Mais, l’impossible n’est pas Camerounais! Cameroon-born Vanessa Myers is one of the few faces that is putting Cameroon on the grid. I had a chat with her and here’s what she had to say.
ABY: Hi Vanessa! Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from?
Born in Limbe, Cameroon, I lived in Yaounde and grew up there for the most part. It’s at the age of 13 that I came to Canada to continue my education and follow my dreams. I am the first to a family of two and I have a little sister.
ABY: Whooo, I’m from Limbe too:) When and why did you get into modelling? Was it for the glamour? The money? Pure kicks?
I started modelling at age 18 in Ottawa,Canada and my mother agency is Angie’s Models & Talent. To be honest, I started because I love to dress up and I always dreamt of walking a real runway since the age of 10.
ABY: Have you always known that you were going to be a model?
I never knew I would come this far in modelling but I had hopes.
ABY: What is the most challenging thing about what you do?
Challenges, well there is obviously a lot of competition between the girls but we all are unique in our way.
ABY: What work are you most proud of? Why?
I’m most proud of one commercial I did for Journalists For Human Rights(JHR). The commercial brought ht awareness to
the violence against women in South Africa and I had to portray a South African lady being abused. It was emotional and when you get into the role of that person, it gets emotional because I can’t possibly imagine what these women go through daily. It was an unforgettable experience. Directed by Award Winning Director ; Steve Gordon.
ABY: Who are some of your favorite models and designers, and why?
My favorite model is Constance Jablonski because she is so flawless, beautiful and talented! I have quite a few designers that come to mind so its hard to choose but i really love Balmain by Pierre Balmain, the fabric is beautiful and the dresses are so luxurious!
ABY: Oh dear, I’d wear a Balmain design anyday, anywhere, anytime. (Hope he’s reading this). What are your favourite glossy mags?
I’d say the two magazines I read the most are Elle Magazine and People’s Magazine.
ABY: Your fashion mantra?
My fashion Mantra? I love simplicity…i think simplicity is sophistication on another level.
ABY: J’adore ton style! How would you describe it and where do you generally shop?
I don’t really have a specific style. It depends on my mood. I shop everywhere! I love American Apparel, Urban Outfitters, H&M and many more.
ABY: The pros and cons of modelling for you are…?
What I love about modelling is the different people you meet and the whole experience is always exciting. Having to constantly watch my weight is what I hate the most but a healthy lifestyle is a good one.
ABY: Any tips for girls looking to get into your line of work?
For girls looking to breakthrough, I would say:
-Be sure you are in for the right reasons
–Be yourself at all times
-Be humble
–Work hard
–Appreciate and enjoy every moment and opportunity you get.
ABY: Pretty solid advice. If you weren’t a model what would you be?
If i wasn’t a model, i’d most likely be your average girl next door 🙂
ABY: Hmmmm, let’s have one more look at this portfolio…
ABY: Nothing about this screams girl next door to me. *Side eye* Don’t know ’bout you. Actually, I love your skin! What’s your regimen?
Hahaha thanks for the compliment! I eat healthy but I have 2 cheat days when I can indulge in something like pizza or a burger. As far as workout is concerned, I run a lot, I play sports and I do long walks when I have the time.
ABY: Lucky you! My dear if I indulge in a burger or two I shall be eligible to audition as Big Momma in Big Momma’s House…let’s leave it at that. What does the future hold for Vanessa Myers?
Hmmm…for the future, i can’t spill too much but i’ll definitely have some exciting projects coming up!
ABY: Where can people see your work?
