Sweet Listen: Ozee – Designer Girl

I know we ladies all love fashion, especially the big brand names like Louis V, Prada and Gucci. But we can always try not to make our designer cravings so obvious especially to guys who are still in the process of trying to choose which opening line to impress us with. (Even though it’s fun to name drop sometimes :)).Because they will use it against us. Which is what Ozee, a budding Nigerian singer, has done here in his new single called ‘Designer Girl.’  He explains the hell he goes through when he tries to ask a ‘Designer Girl’ out. LOL.
So this bit is dedicated to all my Designer Sisters, but mind you who bear no similarities at all with the lady described here!
Doesn’t matter really. Any beat that make me dance is a good beat. And this did! So enjoy!

What’s In ‘Fur’ Real.

By Posted on 1 1.4K

Summer’s out and winter’s in once more. And it’s getting to that period when it feels so cold that you start to think ‘To heck with fashion” because it’s freezing like crazy outside and you wouldn’t mind stepping out of your house wrapped in something that looks like the duvet your great grandma used to dress her bed decades ago.As long as it keeps you warm right? Well, that doesn’t have to be the case. As Seymour Hicks would say,  “A man does not buy his wife a fur coat to keep her warm, but to keep her pleasant.”
Yes, the words ‘warm’ and ‘glam’ can be used to describe one winter item. So if you are thinking on investing this winter in some warm clothing, make sure to include the Faux Fur Coat on your winter essentials list. I mean, what better way to dress warm …

The Brazilian Blowout: A Replacement For The Relaxer?

By Posted on 1 5.9K

I am an African to the core so when it comes to talking about bad hair hair days I have seen it all from breakage, to overdue roots which are as thick as the evil forest, to horrible dye reactions, to frizz, to thinning hair and what have you.  Imagine how high up my ears flew when I heard the words ‘Achieve smooth, healthy, frizz-free hair with radiant shine without using a relaxer,’ all in one sentence. So I thought to myself I’m definitely taking a closer look at this thing.
So what is the Brazilian Blowout? The Brazilian blowout according to what I have learnt, is a new and innovative hair treatment that gives you frizz-free, tangle-free, straight and shiny hair without you having to relax your hair. In their own words, ‘The Brazilian Blowout is the most innovative and effective professional smoothing treatment in the world! Through …

When Black Girls Blush.

By show of hands, who loves blush but is scared to wear it because she is dark skinned or who loves blush and has actually worn it but the minute you step your friends are like, ‘What is that blush on your cheeks? Girl, seriously.’ ‘Oh do black people blush now? Hahaha!’
Wow, so many hands. Okay hands down. This only goes to confirm the conservative belief people have that blush would look horrible on black girls or worse, that black people don’t blush. My question is, since when?
Let me first start by unmystifying these silly myths.
Truth number one: EVERYONE blushes. Dark  tones just prevents you from seeing the pink pigmentation under some people’s skin when they blush. Which is a good thing if you’re trying to mask your emotions but let’s not get into that now.
Secondly, EVERYONE can wear blush. If you’ve got a cheek, there’s a …

‘Feroce et Calme’ by Mariam Afolabi

The Algaia label introduces a new and debut collection by the talented Mariam Afolabi who is a London based Nigerian designer. The new collection is titled ‘Feroce et Calme’ which is French for Fierce and Calm. The designer admits she has been inspired by a Marilyn Monroe quote which goes  ”I don’t mind living in a man’s world, so long as I can be a woman in it.”  Each piece in her collection bears an aspect which makes the name Feroce et Calme very apt. The feminine pieces showcase calmness in their maxi lengths but their sheer and see-through aspect add fierceness. And what is fierce about the menswear? Well, apart from the male model (forgive my trespasses), Mariam’s use tribal and ethnic references is pure ferocious. There is both strength and vulnerability highlighted in each piece. What are your thoughts?
