Mellow in Yellow

February 4, 2012
In the last few weeks or so, I have noticed an increasing number of celebrities develop a new liking for the colour yellow.  Being a strong protester against all things drab, and a bright colour advocate myself, I am not at all surprised. In fact I am happy. This improvement has put me in a mellow state. All things bright and beautiful come in yellow; like the sun, bananas, daffodils & sunflowers, my favourite laid-back cardigan, Big Bird…this list could go on forever.
So before we delve into deciding who wears yellow best, I thought I’d give a few pointers on how I think yellow should be word.
First off, yellow is a very tricky colour to pull off, mind you. It instantly gets you noticed because of it’s stand-out nature. But you certainly do not want to get noticed for the wrong reasons.
1. Different shades of yellow go with different skin tones. If you have darker skin, you should opt for brighter shades of yellow or mustard. People with pale skin should opt for deeper shades of yellow instead of lighter shades so as not to look washed. Notice how in the pictures below, Solange can get away with wearing a pale yellow because of her slightly darker skin. Emma Stone on the other hand is adorned in a deeper shade that will not wash out or clash with her pale skin tone.

 2. When in doubt, block it! Yellow is known to be one of the most popular colours used in a colour-blocking ensemble. Why is that? This is because, yellow albeit being a bright and notice-me colour will mix well with bright as well as dark colours. If ever you were considering a debut in colour blocking, please make sure there is a yellow item on your list. Be it an accessory, as in a belt, shoe or bag; or a scarf or a skirt or just whatever, make sure you’ve got something yellow in there.

 3. Yellow is very versatile. Do not limit yourself to wearing it on the beach or for a day out with the girls. As much as yellow is informal, it can also be a very formal colour that you wear to conventions, conferences or even to the office. That is why super women like Michelle Obama and Kate Middleton are rocking yellow.

4. Complement yellow with gold (plated) accessories. Accessorizing yellow might be a bit tricky as well. Minimal is a key word here. Do not over-accessorize yellow. The colour of the outfit speaks for itself. You do not need all the accessories. In my opinion, yellow looks better with gold (plated) accessories because they are similar and complement each other very well plus they just somehow make the look seem more expensive and chic:)

After having discussed all of these pointers, let’s see which celeb knows how to wear their yellow best.
